The Austrian National Design Prize was first awarded in 1962 under the title “Staatspreis für Gute Form” at the Vienna Secession. Over the decades, the name and focus of the prize have evolved, reflecting changing perspectives on design in Austria:
1962–1986: Staatspreis für Gute Form
1987–1990: Staatspreis für Gutes Design
1991–1997: Staatspreis für Design
Since 2001: Staatspreis Design
More than 50 years after its inception, IDRV – Institute of Design Research Vienna – was commissioned to compile the first complete overview of all award winners since 1962. This research represents a key step in documenting and understanding the history and impact of design in Austria.

As a first outcome, a comprehensive list of annual prize winners was published in the official documentation of the Austrian National Design Prize 2013, edited by designaustria. The ongoing research was later expanded to include images and additional information about the awarded projects, and will be published in 2014.
