Regenerative Design
Essay by Ronja Grossar
as part of the exhibition catalogue
»Design With a Purpose«
Number 4 in the series »Vienna Climate Biennale Positions«.
The publication in which the essay by Ronja Grossar was published accompanies the exhibition of the same name “Design With a Purpose,” which was curated by the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK and shown as part of the Vienna Climate Biennale 2024. It highlights the role of design as a key to an ecologically and socially sustainable way of life.
Ronja Grossar, a design researcher at the IDRV, was invited to contribute an essay on the topic of the exhibition. “Wenn Design zu Sinnhaftem anstiftet – When design inspires purpose” contrasts the findings of a study on the Purpose Economy with our current research focus on the approach of Regenerative Design.
Design can take on responsibility, despite its origins as a tool of the consumer society. The objects and projects presented in “Design With a Purpose” demonstrate how a respectful approach to materials, energy, and people is possible without relying on exploitation. They tell stories, build relationships, and challenge existing systems, always with a focus on aesthetics and functionality.
