The Aesthetics of Sustainable Design
Wednesday, December, 12th, 2012, 19:00
designforum Vienna, MQ, Museumsplatz 1, 1070 Vienna
Sustainable design is not an endeavor dominated by questions of aesthetics, but a fundamental re-conception and redesign of objects, products or service systems with regard to environmental and social sustainability. But without the knowledge of the significance of symbolic and aesthetic attributes, it will be difficult for sustainable design to establish itself.
Green design has only partially emancipated itself from the anti-modernist aesthetic preferences of the alternative movement of the 1970s and 80s; at the same time, expectations of an ecological look and feel have been deliberately abused for non-sustainable solutions.
Circle 00005 aims to stimulate a debate on the aesthetics of sustainable design, and will deal in particular with questions of authenticity, reduction and the phenomenon of “greenwashing”.
